Subtraction Within 100 Worksheets (No Regrouping)

These worksheets practice two-digit subtraction by place value: subtract the tens from the tens and the ones from the ones. Every problem works without regrouping (borrowing), so each column can be solved on its own.

They go a little beyond the 1st grade standard, which covers subtracting tens, and lead straight into 2nd grade subtraction. They are a good bridge for strong first graders and a good warm-up for second graders.

  1. 60 โˆ’ 30 = _____
  2. 97 โˆ’ 32 = _____
  3. 97 โˆ’ 13 = _____
  4. 79 โˆ’ 62 = _____
  5. 85 โˆ’ 41 = _____
  6. 99 โˆ’ 26 = _____
  7. 98 โˆ’ 28 = _____
  8. 95 โˆ’ 10 = _____

Worked example

86 โˆ’ 13

  1. Subtract the tens: 8 tens โˆ’ 1 ten = 7 tens, which is 70.
  2. Subtract the ones: 6 โˆ’ 3 = 3.
  3. Put them together: 70 + 3 = 73.
  4. Check by adding: 73 + 13 = 86. โœ“

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting a zero in the answer. 81 โˆ’ 51 is 30, not 3: there are 3 tens and 0 ones.
  • Subtracting across places, like taking the ones digit from the tens digit. Columns or base-ten blocks keep the places straight.

Tips for practicing at home

  • Use a hundred chart: moving up one row subtracts 10, and moving left one square subtracts 1.
  • Act it out with dimes and pennies.
  • Check every answer by adding it back.
