Worked example

5 tens and 4 ones

  1. 5 tens is 5 groups of ten: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50.
  2. 4 ones is 4.
  3. 50 and 4 more is 54.
  4. The tens digit is 5 and the ones digit is 4.

Common mistakes

  • Writing 504, because "fifty" and "four" are written side by side as 50 and 4. Showing 54 as 50 + 4 with place value cards helps.
  • Swapping the digits and writing 45. Ask: "Which digit tells how many tens?"

Tips for practicing at home

  • Bundle straws or craft sticks into tens with rubber bands, then build numbers.
  • Use dimes for tens and pennies for ones.
  • Say numbers in "tens language" now and then: 54 is "5 tens and 4."

Common Core standards

1.NBT.B.2
Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones.
