Addition Within 100 Worksheets (No Regrouping)

These worksheets practice adding two-digit numbers by place value: tens go with tens, and ones go with ones. Every problem is chosen so that no column adds up to 10 or more, so there is no regrouping (carrying).

That makes them ideal for learning the idea before regrouping comes along in 2nd grade. Once a child can explain why 34 + 52 is 8 tens and 6 ones, regrouping makes much more sense.

Sample problems

  1. 50 + 17 = _____
  2. 24 + 22 = _____
  3. 62 + 12 = _____
  4. 21 + 63 = _____
  5. 50 + 19 = _____
  6. 52 + 36 = _____
  7. 62 + 37 = _____
  8. 46 + 52 = _____

Worked example

34 + 52

  1. Add the tens: 3 tens + 5 tens = 8 tens, which is 80.
  2. Add the ones: 4 + 2 = 6.
  3. Put them together: 80 + 6 = 86.
  4. So 34 + 52 = 86.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up places, like adding the tens digit of one number to the ones digit of the other. Writing the problem in columns helps.
  • Misaligned columns when copying a problem vertically. Graph paper keeps each digit in its own box.

Tips for practicing at home

  • Use dimes and pennies: 34 is 3 dimes and 4 pennies.
  • Make bundles of 10 straws with rubber bands to show tens.
  • Ask your child to estimate first: "about 30 plus about 50 is about 80."

Common Core standards
