Addition Within 20 Worksheets

First graders add within 20 with strategies, not just counting by ones. The most important ones are making ten (8 + 5 is 8 + 2 + 3, which is 10 + 3), doubles (6 + 6 = 12) and near doubles (6 + 7 is one more than 6 + 6).

Every total on these worksheets is 20 or less. Fluency within 10 is the end-of-year goal; for bigger facts, children should be able to explain a quick strategy.

Sample problems

  1. 3 + 8 = _____
  2. 3 + 14 = _____
  3. 9 + 2 = _____
  4. 1 + 11 = _____
  5. 4 + 14 = _____
  6. 5 + 12 = _____
  7. 11 + 4 = _____
  8. 3 + 1 = _____

Worked example

9 + 4

  1. 9 is close to 10. It needs 1 more to make 10.
  2. Take 1 from the 4, which leaves 3.
  3. Now the problem is 10 + 3, which is 13.
  4. So 9 + 4 = 13.

Common mistakes

  • Counting everything by ones. It works, but it is slow and easy to get wrong with bigger numbers. Make-ten and doubles are worth teaching directly.
  • Writing teen numbers backwards, such as 31 for 13, because we say "thir-teen" with the 3 first. Point out that 13 is 1 ten and 3 ones.

Tips for practicing at home

  • Practice doubles until they are automatic: 1 + 1 through 10 + 10.
  • Use two ten-frames side by side and move counters to fill the first frame.
  • Play a "make ten" card game: find pairs of cards that add to 10.

Common Core standards

1.OA.C.6
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10, using strategies such as counting on and making ten.
