Skip Counting by 2s Worksheets

Skip counting by 2s means saying every other number: 2, 4, 6, 8. Each problem shows a sequence counting by 2s with one number missing, and children fill in the gap.

Counting by 2s is quicker than counting by ones, it leads directly to even and odd numbers in 2nd grade, and it is the first step toward multiplication.

Worked example

Count by 2s: 20, 22, 24, __, 28

  1. Each number is 2 more than the one before: 20, 22, 24.
  2. Add 2 to 24 to get the next number: 26.
  3. Check that it fits: 26 + 2 = 28, the number after the blank. ✓
  4. The missing number is 26.

Common mistakes

  • Counting by ones and writing 25. Check the numbers on both sides of the blank: they should be 4 apart.
  • Losing the pattern when crossing a ten, such as going from 18 to 20. Practicing on a hundred chart makes the pattern visible.

Tips for practicing at home

  • Count pairs of socks or shoes by 2s.
  • Color every other square on a hundred chart, then read the colored numbers aloud.
  • Jump or clap on every second number while counting out loud.

Common Core standards

1.NBT.A.1
Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120.
2.OA.C.3
