Three-Digit Subtraction Worksheets (Within 1,000)
Three-digit subtraction can regroup twice: a ten into ones, and a hundred into tens. Every problem on these worksheets subtracts from a number up to 1,000.
Watch for zeros in the middle, like 209 โ 143. With 0 tens there is nothing to take from, so a hundred has to be regrouped into ten tens first. This is where most mistakes happen, and it is worth practicing slowly.

- 628 โ 533 = _____
- 594 โ 223 = _____
- 957 โ 701 = _____
- 369 โ 241 = _____
- 918 โ 716 = _____
- 906 โ 407 = _____
- 926 โ 674 = _____
- 309 โ 262 = _____
Worked example
617 โ 383
- Ones: 7 โ 3 = 4.
- Tens: 1 โ 8 does not work. Regroup one hundred into ten tens: 5 hundreds and 11 tens.
- Tens: 11 โ 8 = 3. Hundreds: 5 โ 3 = 2.
- So 617 โ 383 = 234. Check: 234 + 383 = 617. โ
Common mistakes
- Regrouping across a zero. In 209 โ 143 the tens digit is 0, so a hundred must become 10 tens before you can subtract 4 tens.
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in each column, which ignores regrouping completely.
Tips for practicing at home
- Count up on an open number line: from 383 to 400 is 17, to 600 is 200 more, and to 617 is 17 more. 17 + 200 + 17 = 234.
- Always check by adding.
- Model with base-ten blocks, physically trading a hundred flat for ten rods.
Common Core standards
