Addition With Regrouping Worksheets

Regrouping (often called carrying) happens when a column adds up to 10 or more. Ten ones are traded for one ten, which moves to the tens column.

Every problem on these worksheets adds two two-digit numbers and needs regrouping in the ones column. Some sums go past 100, which is a nice stretch toward adding within 1,000.

Sample problems

  1. 37 + 24 = _____
  2. 22 + 38 = _____
  3. 38 + 82 = _____
  4. 37 + 19 = _____
  5. 17 + 37 = _____
  6. 44 + 78 = _____
  7. 59 + 53 = _____
  8. 36 + 84 = _____

Worked example

48 + 35

  1. Add the ones: 8 + 5 = 13. That is 1 ten and 3 ones.
  2. Write the 3 in the ones place and regroup the 1 ten into the tens column.
  3. Add the tens: 4 + 3 + the regrouped 1 = 8 tens.
  4. So 48 + 35 = 83.

Common mistakes

  • Writing the whole 13 in the ones place, giving an answer like 713. Only one digit fits in each place.
  • Forgetting the regrouped ten and answering 73. Writing a small 1 above the tens column is a good reminder.

Tips for practicing at home

  • Use base-ten blocks or coins: trade 10 pennies for a dime when you have 10 or more.
  • Say "regroup" or "trade" rather than just "carry the 1", so the meaning sticks.
  • Estimate first: 48 + 35 is about 50 + 35, so 83 makes sense.
