Three-Digit Addition Worksheets (Within 1,000)

Adding within 1,000 uses exactly the same ideas as two-digit addition, with one more place: hundreds. Every sum on these worksheets is 1,000 or less.

The new challenge is regrouping in the tens column. Ten tens make one hundred, so a tens column that adds up to 10 or more sends a hundred over to the hundreds column.

Sample problems

  1. 175 + 695 = _____
  2. 601 + 161 = _____
  3. 244 + 715 = _____
  4. 519 + 446 = _____
  5. 426 + 241 = _____
  6. 101 + 429 = _____
  7. 295 + 451 = _____
  8. 337 + 500 = _____

Worked example

472 + 291

  1. Ones: 2 + 1 = 3.
  2. Tens: 7 + 9 = 16 tens. That is 1 hundred and 6 tens, so write 6 and regroup the hundred.
  3. Hundreds: 4 + 2 + the regrouped 1 = 7.
  4. So 472 + 291 = 763.

Common mistakes

  • Misaligned digits when a problem is copied by hand, so ones get added to tens. Graph paper or lined-up columns fix this.
  • Not regrouping in the tens column, because children are used to regrouping only ones. Remind them that any column can regroup.

Tips for practicing at home

  • Write numbers in expanded form: 472 is 400 + 70 + 2.
  • Estimate by rounding to hundreds: 500 + 300 = 800, so 763 is reasonable.
  • Use play money with $1, $10 and $100 bills.
