Addition Within 5 Worksheets
Adding within 5 is where addition starts. Kindergartners learn that putting two small groups together makes a bigger group, and every answer on these worksheets is 5 or less.
The goal by the end of kindergarten is fluency: answering facts like 2 + 3 without needing to count every object. Short, frequent practice gets children there faster than long sessions.

Worked example
2 + 3
- Hold up 2 fingers on one hand.
- Hold up 3 fingers on the other hand.
- Count all the fingers together: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
- So 2 + 3 = 5.
Common mistakes
- Counting the starting number twice. To add 3 to 2, a child may say "2, 3, 4" and answer 4. Counting on starts at the next number: 3, 4, 5.
- Thinking that adding 0 changes a number. Adding zero means nothing new joins the group, so 4 + 0 is still 4.
Tips for practicing at home
- Use snacks or toys: "You have 1 grape and I give you 3 more. How many now?"
- Play the hand game: show some fingers on each hand and ask for the total.
- A few minutes a day beats one long session.
Common Core standards
