Addition Within 10 Worksheets

By the end of kindergarten, children add numbers with totals up to 10 using objects, drawings and their fingers. Every problem on these worksheets has a total of 10 or less.

This is also where "making 10" begins. Knowing that 7 and 3 make 10 is one of the most useful facts a child can learn, because first graders use it to add bigger numbers.

Sample problems

  1. 1 + 4 = _____
  2. 4 + 6 = _____
  3. 2 + 4 = _____
  4. 5 + 5 = _____
  5. 2 + 1 = _____
  6. 6 + 3 = _____
  7. 6 + 4 = _____
  8. 6 + 2 = _____

Worked example

6 + 3

  1. Start with the bigger number, 6, and keep it in your head.
  2. Count on 3 more, putting up a finger for each: 7, 8, 9.
  3. The last number you said is the answer: 6 + 3 = 9.
  4. Starting with the bigger number means fewer steps to count.

Common mistakes

  • Losing track while counting on. Children often count one too many or too few. Putting up a finger for each number counted fixes this.
  • Not noticing the sign. On a page full of addition, some children stop reading the + sign. Pointing to the sign before each problem builds a good habit.

Tips for practicing at home

  • Turn an egg carton into a ten-frame: fill 6 cups, add 3 more, and count the filled cups.
  • Practice the pairs that make 10 (1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5) like a rhyme.
  • Roll two dice and add them; start with only the 1 to 5 faces.
