Addition and Subtraction Within 10 Worksheets
Mixed worksheets put addition and subtraction on the same page, with every number 10 or less. Children have to read the sign before solving each problem.
That sounds small, but checking the sign is a habit that prevents a lot of careless mistakes later on. Mixed practice also shows whether a child really understands both operations, or is just repeating the last thing they did.

- 5 + 4 = _____
- 4 โ 4 = _____
Worked example
8 + 2 and 8 โ 2
- Both problems use 8 and 2, so look at the sign first.
- 8 + 2: start at 8 and count on 2: 9, 10. The answer is 10.
- 8 โ 2: start at 8 and count back 2: 7, 6. The answer is 6.
- Same numbers, different sign, different answer.
Common mistakes
- Adding everything on autopilot after a few addition problems in a row. Circling each sign before starting the page prevents this.
- Answers that go the wrong way, like a subtraction answer bigger than the starting number. Ask: "Should the answer be bigger or smaller?"
Tips for practicing at home
- Highlight + signs in one color and โ signs in another before your child starts.
- Before each problem, ask "bigger or smaller?" and let your child predict.
- Keep sessions short: 10 problems done carefully beat 40 rushed ones.
